Just three other medical centers topped the 500 organ transplants completed at Tampa General in 2011, according to new data from the national Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network. The hospital ranked 10th in the nation the previous year.

An increase in patient referrals, additional staff and organ availability contributed to the one-year, 80-transplant increase, said Angie Korsun, Tampa General’s transplant administrator.

Until recently, most patients didn’t ask many questions about who would be doing their anesthesia. “Patients are more savvy now,” says Agricola, “and their level of concern is often driven by the news cycle.” The death of Michael Jackson from propofol in 2009 elevated the public’s concern about the risks of anesthesia, Agricola says. Patients started asking questions: What exactly does an anesthesiologist do? Is mine competent? Can I ask for a specific doctor?

It’s a complex job that can make the difference between someone feeling a whole lot better or spiraling into addiction.

But lately, images of out-of-control Florida pain clinics with lines of addicts — many of them from out of state — has left a stain on this pain business.

Nel, 44, feels the backlash and it makes him angry. Often he’s trying to help someone like Spearance, who is suffering but doesn’t want to be on drugs.

“We’ll find other ways,” he told her.

The world’s first CVRx Rheos system procedure was performed at Tampa General Hospital on Wednesday, January 6, 2010. The CVRx Rheos system, a device that is a little smaller than a thin wallet with wires leading to the carotid arteries, is designed to improve heart function and lower risk of death by monitoring and sending electrical signals to those arteries. Wednesday’s surgery was the first time the device was implanted for heart failure. The same device has been used in a clinical trial with 300 patients to lower blood pressure.

Gulf-to-Bay Anesthesiology Associates provided anesthesia services for the two hour surgery that yielded an immediate 30 percent drop in the patient’s blood pressure when the device was activated. Read More…
